Originally a Circle, Central Excise Division, Ranchi was elevated to
its present status of Division in 1962. The jurisdiction covered whole
of South Bihar including Gaya and Shahabad Districts. With the pace of
industrialization and continuous broadening of Central Excise Tariff
spectrum, workload had increased tremendously. Hence, to ease the
workload and to achieve better control over the trade & Taxpayers,
three new divisions namely Gaya, Jamshedpur and Dhanbad were carved
out from the Ranchi Division. Later on, Jamshedpur was elevated to
Commissionerate. In the year 2002, a new Commissionerate i.e., Ranchi
Commissionerate comprising four divisions such as Ranchi, Hazaribagh,
Bokaro & Dhanbad, was carved out of erstwhile Jamshedpur
Commissionerate and started its function from 01.11.2002.

The Ranchi Divisional Office is situated at 417/B, Road No. 5B, Ashok
Nagar, Ranchi. Presently the jurisdiction of Ranchi Division under
Ranchi Commissionerate, covers the District of Ranchi, Gumla,
Lohardaga, Simdega, and newly created District Ramgarh and Khunti.
